The Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) is among the leading museums that preserve, maintain, and interpret millions of scientific specimens and objects. To honor those who contribute to this mission, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History recognizes individuals and organizations through awards, such as the Carnegie Mineralogical Award.
Annually, the Carnegie Mineralogical Award recognizes individuals and mineral organizations for their outstanding contributions to the preservation, maintenance, and education of minerals. Established in 1987, the Hillman Foundation funds the award. Eligible applicants include educators, collectors, curators, museums, mineral clubs and societies, publications, universities, and private mineral enthusiasts.
In 2023, William B. (Skip) Simmons Jr won the award. A professor at the University of New Orleans, he taught the subject and formed the Mineralogy, Petrology, and Pegmatology research group. After retiring, he continued his work with this research group when he relocated to the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum. The researcher authored over 500 papers in his name and co-authored a paper on a new mineral classification system.
